Using Alkanet Oil to get a greater depth of colour

Alkanet Oil is used for giving Walnut stocks a greater depth of colour and enhancing the figure and graining within the wood.

If the stock already has a finish it will be necessary to remove this to enable the oil to penetrate into the wood. A 400 wet/dry paper with a little oil should remove most oil finishes, however if the stock has a very thick lacquer on it, you may need a lacquer remover.

Using a brush or rag, apply the oil to the stock and forend quite liberally covering the whole surface including the chequering. A new stock will absorb more oil than an old one, each stock will differ in the amount of colour and contrast. Allow the oil to penetrate then repeat the oiling process until the depth of colour that you require has been reached.
